Title - Coming Out of the Box.

By - Sushama Kasbekar

Coming out of the box, it was not long ago that subjects like menstrual cramps, sanitary napkins, or uterus removal were not heard from anyone except in whispers. People refused to understand or talk about a woman’s body except in hushed tones. Today, much has changed: there’s even a period of leave for those going through difficult times. The tones are more sympathetic and compassionate.

Similarly, a live-in relationship was looked down upon or even unheard of, especially in small towns and cities. Girls who indulged in such relationships were looked at askance or simply shunned. However, now such relationships are accepted in cities, and many are in a girlfriend/boyfriend relationship, which is exploratory or temporary. It’s a time to grow up. Sometimes such relationships may become sour, but they can lead to a better understanding of human relationships.

Things have changed undoubtedly; what remains to be seen is whether the younger generation uses the freedom with care and prudence. Breaking barriers towards a healthy change is commendable, but caution and restraint can add value.
