GANESH CHATURTHI – THE GRAND WELCOME OF BAPPA

“Ganapati Bappa Morya! Mangal Murti Morya!”
The moment I hear these words, my heart fills with happiness! Ganesh Chaturthi is one of my favorite festivals. It is the festival of Lord Ganesha – the elephant-faced God of wisdom, happiness and good luck. People all over India celebrate this beautiful festival with great devotion and excitement.

But have you ever wondered how Lord Ganesha got his elephant face?

Long ago, Goddess Parvati created a little boy from the sandalwood paste on her body and gave him life. She named him Ganesha and loved him very much. One day, Parvati asked Ganesha to guard the door while she was bathing. Soon, Lord Shiva came home, but Ganesha did not know him and stopped him at the door.

Lord Shiva became angry and a fight took place. Sadly, Ganesha lost his head. Goddess Parvati was heartbroken and became very angry. Lord Shiva then promised to bring Ganesha back to life. His followers brought the head of the first living being they found facing north – an elephant. Lord Shiva placed the elephant's head on Ganesha and gave him a new life.

That is how our beloved elephant-faced Ganesha was born again!

Ganesha is also called Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, and Buddhiprada, the giver of wisdom. Before starting something important, people pray to Ganesha and ask for his blessings.

Every year, when Ganesh Chaturthi arrives, it feels as if Bappa himself is coming to visit us! The streets become bright and colorful. Roads are cleaned, houses are decorated and beautiful lights shine everywhere. Huge and colorful mandapams are built to welcome Bappa. The sound of drums and bands fills the air, and people dance happily on the streets.


The markets become even more exciting. We can see Ganesha idols of every size and design – from tiny idols that can fit in our hands to giant idols that are taller than us! Some have beautiful crowns, some are sitting on swings, and some have colorful decorations. Choosing our favorite Ganesha idol is itself a wonderful experience.

At home, mothers prepare delicious modaks, laddus, payasam and many other prasadam for Bappa. Modak is especially special because it is believed to be Lord Ganesha's favourite sweet.

On the festival day, we wear our best clean clothes and welcome Ganesha home. We decorate his place with flowers and lights and perform Ganapati pooja with our family. We offer fruits, flowers and prasadam and pray for knowledge, happiness, good health and success.
I especially love placing my books near Bappa and praying for good knowledge and good marks. 📚🙏 It feels like Bappa is blessing me before I begin my studies!
The celebration does not stop at home.
Families go outside to see the beautifully decorated mandapams. We enjoy the lights, music, decorations and different Ganesha idols. The whole city feels like one big celebration.

But after a few days comes the most emotional moment – Ganapati Visarjan.

We become sad because our dear Bappa is going back. But we do not say goodbye with tears alone. We take him with music, dancing, drums and colors. Everyone comes together – children, parents, grandparents and friends – and celebrates.

As Bappa leaves, we say:

“Ganapati Bappa Morya!
Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!”

It means, “Bappa, come back soon next year!”

Even though Bappa's idol goes away, his blessings remain in our hearts. Ganesh Chaturthi teaches us that faith, family, happiness and togetherness can bring everyone closer.

And when the festival ends, I am already waiting for the next year to come…

Because when Bappa comes, he doesn't just enter our homes –
he enters our hearts!
